Snoring (Kharrate): Causes, Symptoms, Complications & Complete Ayurvedic Treatment

 Introduction – What is Snoring?

Snoring is the harsh sound produced when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is partially obstructed during sleep. This obstruction causes the soft tissues of the throat to vibrate, producing noise of varying intensity.

Some people snore lightly, while others produce extremely loud snoring that can disturb the sleep of their partner, family members, and even themselves.

According to global research,

  • 40% of men,

  • 25% of women,

  • and 10% children
    snore regularly.

In Ayurveda, snoring is associated with Kapha imbalance, blocked air channels, and disturbed Prana Vata.

Why Does Snoring Occur? (Causes of Snoring)

1. Weak or Relaxed Throat Muscles

With age or excessive fatigue, throat muscles loosen. When they collapse, the airway narrows, leading to vibration and snoring.

2. Obesity

Excess fat around the neck compresses the airway, making airflow difficult.
This is one of the biggest causes of loud snoring.

3. Nasal Congestion (Blocked Nose)

Conditions like

  • Sinusitis

  • Flu

  • Allergies

  • Nasal Polyps

  • Deviated Septum (DNS)
block the airflow and generate noise.

4. Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol relaxes throat muscles excessively, increasing vibration during sleep.

5. Sleeping in Wrong Position

Sleeping on the back causes the tongue to fall backward, blocking airflow → snoring.

6. Sleep Apnea – The Most Dangerous Cause

Sleep apnea is a disorder where breathing stops for 10–20 seconds during sleep.

This results in:

  • Reduced oxygen to brain

  • Increased heart pressure

  • Disturbed sleep cycles

Snoring with apnea needs immediate medical attention.

7. Hypothyroidism

Low thyroid function causes swelling of throat tissues → narrowed airway → snoring.

8. Enlarged Tonsils & Adenoids

Especially common in children.

9. Acid Reflux (GERD)

Acid irritation causes throat swelling, leading to snoring.

Symptoms of Snoring

  • Loud breathing noise during sleep

  • Blocked nose

  • Waking up tired

  • Morning headaches

  • Dry throat

  • Daytime sleepiness

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Irritability

  • Reduced productivity

  • Sleep interruptions

  • Memory issues

If snoring is accompanied by breathing pauses, it may indicate Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Complications of Snoring

1. Heart Diseases

Snoring increases the risk of

  • High BP

  • Heart Attack

  • Heart Failure

2. Reduced Brain Oxygen

Poor oxygen supply causes:

  • Stroke

  • Memory loss

  • Depression

  • Confusion

3. Weight Gain

Poor sleep disturbs hunger hormones → overeating → obesity → more snoring.

4. Mood & Relationship Problems

Partners often sleep separately due to loud snoring.

5. Complications in Children

  • Poor concentration

  • Slow learning

  • Growth issues

  • Obesity
